This is the website for my favorite poem. It is written by Jeremy David T. Garrett.
The Lone Knight
This is about a boy who is sent to fight the encroaching darkness. So he gathers his friends and they go off to war. They helped each other fight off the sins of the other. But one of the friends was doing all the sinning. The friend was a betrayer, and turncoat. This 'friend' captured his friends. and locked them up in the darkest pit. The 'friend' even started to single out who he was going to kill individually. The boy broke free, and killed his 'friend.' After this the boy swore an oath to the gods that he will fight alone. To accomplish this he broke all ties to his friends, and moved on. He wandered where his demons would bring him further into darkness. The boy vanquished all evil eventually his soul was completely frosted over. Until he meets this beautiful girl in peril. Following his knightly oath to protect the weak. He charged the bandits holding the girl hostage. He fought them all and emerged victorious. His goals started to change. Instead of waging war he wanted to start a family with this girl. But fate is a cruel trickster indeed. He was happy to live a life so free. But the darkness took away the lone knight's world. The knight returned to his town. Seeing the village in shambles, and his family dead. Once again the lone knight took up arms, for vengeance ran in his veins. He packed his blade, took his horse, and went straight into the darkness's maw. For the lone knight wanted to destroy the darkness by his hand. So he marched on into that bleak land; until the day he couldn't fight anymore. He mowed down crowd after crowd to get to the center. But he was taking losses of his own, having many cuts that went straight to the bone. And as he stood against the King of Black, the lone knight realized how high the other's hand was stacked. The lone knight could barely hold his sword up, but he stood there wishing. He wished he could just win this fight, even though he lost most of his vision. The man slowly came forward to fight off the knight. Laughing at the pitiful figure who had so much fight. The knight grimaced as he made his last assault, knowing the death of his world was his own damn fault. The end happened so fast, and so quick another life taken by a quick sword tip. Our hero of this tale stood victorious for a small while. A victor by his own reckless style. The darkness had been defeated but at what cost? A man among men, oh the plans of men, and mice. Often go awry, as the knight saw this second. As he could feel death slowly beckon. And now he stood there, his life force draining away. His eyes clouded in memory. Going back to that day when he saw that pretty girl, and that one big fight. As he died there with a smile, once more a lone knight.
Why do I like this poem?
Because this is an epic. A work of poetry based on the life story of an individual to prove something, or teach a lesson. The Odyssey, and The Iliad are epics. This piece of work is beautiful in the fact that it ends with an ironic ending. Where the knight took out the king of the dark. But in order to take out the king, the hero died as well.
My Favorite Lines:
"To rid the world of that darkness no matter the cost"
"He wandered a while, vanquishing all evil
Letting the blackness consume more of his soul
Til he was at last consumed by his mission"
